The neat, straight, austere lines of a war memorial – shows the power both of formal gardens and public art. The names of those lost are a testament to the endurance of our island. The walkways connect one side of a park with the other, for a contemplative walk. Respectfully empty benches invite one to sit down and consider the luck of being alive, here, at just this moment. A world in which the only target of outrage is statues, is indeed one short on injustice. These names knew more animated enemies and more powerful threats. Its a fine balance… a grand statement that does not glorify war but evokes a sense of peace for those who – through no fault of their own – were dragged into it.
