Nature Documentary vs Nature
6 June 2022

What’s up with documentaries these days? Even nature documentaries seem to overhype themselves to try and get viewers. I could just say here that these sheep appeared and seemed to have fun on the river bank, blissfully assured of their possession of the land, staring at us on the boat with a kind of disdainful indifference. But to make it a nature documentary, we’d cue the tense string music while a gruff voice over announces: ”Suddenly, out of nowhere, Devonian attack sheep appear on the bank. Everyone on board and the crew freeze and remain deathly quiet, because we know our lives are in danger. At any moment the sheep can attack.”
And then for half an hour, nothing happens, before we do a little moralizing and sermonizing even though you personally have done nothing but be as green and kind as you possibly can.

Peter van der Walt is a fiction author, although you may find some non-fiction and the odd essay out there. Fans can find his newsletter, posts, updates and developments at Currently, he is hard at work on his next story. When not writing, he has far too many interests to reasonably keep up with. He lives with his partner in Devon, England.
